Certified in Pain Reprocessing Therapy
My PRT training comes directly from the Pain Psychology Center in Los Angeles, founded by Alan Gordon, LCSW — the clinician who developed Pain Reprocessing Therapy and co-authored the 2021 JAMA Psychiatry clinical trial on its effectiveness.

This certification is a focused, 21-hour specialized training in Pain Reprocessing Therapy — the specific clinical approach developed and validated by Alan Gordon and researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder. The program covers the core skills used directly in coaching sessions:
- 01The neuroscience of learned pain — how the brain and nervous system generate real pain as a protective response, even without ongoing tissue damage.
- 02Somatic tracking — guiding clients to observe pain sensations with curiosity and safety instead of fear, one of PRT's central techniques.
- 03Safety reappraisal — helping the brain relearn that sensations it has interpreted as dangerous are, in fact, safe.
- 04Graded exposure — supporting clients in gradually returning to movements and activities they've been avoiding out of fear.
- 05Addressing emotional contributors — recognizing how stress, fear, and unresolved emotion can keep the nervous system in a protective state.
- Specialized training in a specific, research-backed method for treating chronic pain
- Issued directly by the organization that developed Pain Reprocessing Therapy
- Focused, hands-on training in the exact techniques used in coaching sessions
- A clinical license to diagnose or treat medical or mental health conditions
- A substitute for medical evaluation — PRT coaching is educational and skills-focused
- A general therapy credential — it is specific to Pain Reprocessing Therapy
I'm also currently completing a Master of Social Work (MSW) — you can read more about my full background on the Meet Rick page.
